How I Work

I assist US lawyers from all kinds of firms in all kinds of settings. Here are some examples.

  • Many of the firms that hire me are among the largest and most sophisticated firms in the country—firms that have the capacity to figure out how to proceed but cannot do it as efficiently or cost-effectively. I have done work for very large firms in patent disputes, shareholder and other financial disputes, large class actions, and others.
  • In other cases, lawyers from very small practices, or lawyers in practice areas that don’t often involve cross-border issues, consult me because they don’t have the in-house experience necessary to develop an effective strategy. I have helped lawyers in these settings in cases involving family law, small business disputes, consumer disputes, and others.

I most often work on a flat fee, a la carte basis. I give clients fixed prices for the tasks they ask me to do. These typically include:

  • Drafting a letter of request, letter rogatory, or commission, as the case requires.
  • Drafting a motion to the US court for issuance of the letter of request, letter rogatory, or commission.
  • Coordinating with local counsel through execution of the letter or commission.

I also can identify and retain local counsel on your behalf (though the obligation to pay the local counsel’s fees are ultimately the client’s, not mine). I have a good network of lawyers in countries around the world, including lawyers with good contacts in the relevant ministries and lawyers with experience in private international law, who can assist.

My advice on the best strategies and approaches for your case are built in to my fees. In other words, I work with you to develop a strategy, which determines which documents we prepare and what course we take.
